Woman doing a seated twist for somatic release and nervous system healing

What Is Somatic Work and Why Does It Actually Work?

A few years ago, after I stopped drinking alcohol for health reasons, I found myself searching for new ways to unwind. I missed the ritual of a glass of wine signaling the end of the day. In its absence, I felt restless, my body still buzzing even though my mind was ready to relax.

One night, without overthinking it, I created a simple practice: I tuned into my senses, moved gently and breathed with intention. I didn’t have a name for it then, but it became my go-to method for settling down.

Later, I discovered this approach had a name: somatic regulation.

What Is Somatic Work?

Somatic practices are body-based techniques that help regulate the nervous system. Unlike traditional mindfulness, which often focuses on the mind, somatic work emphasizes physical sensations and movements to bring about a state of calm.

Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University, highlights the power of breath in regulating the nervous system. He discusses the “physiological sigh”, a double inhale followed by a long exhale, as a quick way to reduce stress and anxiety .

Similarly, Liz Tenuto, known as The Workout Witch, emphasizes that somatic exercises can help release stored tension and trauma, bringing the nervous system back to its optimal state .

Why Does It Work?

Our bodies hold onto stress and trauma, often manifesting as physical tension or restlessness. Somatic practices provide a way to release this stored energy. By engaging in gentle movements, focused breathing, and sensory awareness, we signal to our nervous system that it’s safe to relax.

These practices don’t require hours of meditation or intense workouts. Even a few minutes can make a significant difference.

My Journey with Somatic Practices

When I first developed my 4•3•2•1 Ritual, I didn’t realize I was tapping into somatic principles. But as I delved deeper into the research, I understood why it was so effective. It wasn’t just about calming the mind, it was about engaging the body in the process.

This realization led me to explore more somatic techniques, integrating them into my daily routine and sharing them with others seeking balance and calm.
